Evacuation Plan

The need to evacuate a building can be for several reasons. Some examples of situations where evacuation may be necessary are for a fire, bomb scare, chemical spill, or an “active shooter” event.

Notification of a building evacuation may take place through various means. See the Building Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP) for evacuation procedures.

Depending on the situation, it may also be necessary to notify offices in other buildings. If a fire alarm is sounded, then notifications may not be necessary. Fire alarms should only be activated when there is visible smoke, or a fire in the building. All other evacuations should be done by word of mouth, unless otherwise directed by campus officials.

  1. All persons will evacuate the building as quickly and orderly as possible, using designated evacuation routes. Reference the Building Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP) for evacuation routes. In the case of fire, all classroom and office windows and doors should be closed.
  2. Once outside, a head count should be taken by a faculty member or delegate to assure that no one is left behind. Faculty members should always maintain a class attendance roster.
  3. Once outside, no one will re-enter the building (for any reason) until it has been declared safe by emergency personnel or administration.
  4. While outside, all persons will stay at least 300 feet from the building.

The police and public safety officer on duty at the time of an incident is responsible for assuring that York County 911 Center is notified, so that emergency personnel can be alerted.

Police and public safety and maintenance/janitorial personnel will be responsible for alerting faculty who are teaching in classrooms. They should then take safe positions in view of the building entrances to prevent entry until the emergency is over.

  1. Notify faculty members as quickly as possible so that they can. evacuate their students.
  2. Faculty and students will leave the building in accordance to evacuation routes (as quickly and orderly as possible) and gather at assembly points for attendance. Faculty members should assist students in evacuation procedures and help to get them to the evacuation destinations.
  3. Any persons not accounted for should be reported to University or emergency officials immediately.

Individuals are expected to remain on campus until otherwise instructed. In the case of an active shooter type situation, individuals should get as far away from the incident as possible and find cover. Leaving campus by vehicle is not recommended as this may cause a traffic jam which could put people in danger. It could also impede incoming emergency vehicles.
